The Porceleyne fles pottery.
Decor: Military man Year: 1928. High:
45.5cm. Wide: 45.5m Painted
by: Johannes (Jan) Van Lijnschoten.
The tile above was painted in the Delft Porceleyne fles pottery. It was
painted around the same time as most of the other Gouda pottery on my
website. The plaque (Plate) below does not have the traditional blue
colours that are present on most other Porceleyne fles items, but it is an
excellent example of what they produced in a different style.
It was most likely created on request and as such unique.
The sepia color was also used by painters in the other Gouda potteries.
What strikes me with this painting is the detail the painter managed to
get across. The glaze covering the picture is still of very good quality
with minimal crazing. The glaze actually enhances the picture and gives
his eyes a lifelike appearance.
The painting is of Gustave Marie Verspijck. (born in Gent 19
February 1822 – passed away in The Hague, 7 May 1909). He was ageneral
/supreme commander in the Dutch army, and towards the end of his career
Dutch king William the third honoured him and elevated his social standing
into nobility.
The above average size makes it unlikely that it was painted for an
avarage suburbian house, more likely is that it was custom made , which
makes me believe that this plaque was once the property of an official
institution with ties to the Dutch East Indies.
