Porceleyne fles tile of Pieter BothPorceleyne fles tile of Pieter Both mark
This is the  last one in the tile Gallery, and again from the  Delft Porceleyne fles.

Pieter Both was the first out of a number of Governors in charge of the running of the VOC. (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie.) This was a Dutch company charged with international trade. It was also known as the Dutch East India Company.

The VOC’s main basis was in Jakarta (called Batavia in those days).

Unfortunately for Pieter, he died on the way back to Holland when his term as Governor finished. His ship was destroyed in a storm, and he did not survive.

The plaque or tile was probably painted specifically for a business or institution with historic ties to the Netherlands. So the tile is a really  a one off production.

The previous owner bought this plaque  from antique dealers in Jakarta (Indonesia). When this plaque was bought, there were at least another 2 for sale with the picture of subsequent governors.

Created in 1889  by Leon Senf, the colour of the painting is bluish-grey, and measures 37cm X 51cm.
