Decor: Paijsage Year: 1901. High:
12.6cm. Wide: 25cm Painted
by: DG = Andries de Groot.
A Gouda Zuid Holland tile with a typical old fashioned Dutch rural
landscape and a common greyish sky as often seen in the Netherlands.
The small bridge across the water is hand operated and can be pulled
up to let boats through.
A rural village on the left and a traditional Dutch wind operated mill
right in front.
Painter Andries worked for the PZH from the very start. In the early years
of production it was quite normal for painters to use the initial of the
surname.
In Holland his surname would be "de Groot", hence the initials DG.
Andries painted many different tiles and tile tableaus. He often signed
his work on the front as well as on the back. Also other signatures I have
seen from him often have the D and G intertwined.
The tile itself is quite thin, and feels more like porcelain and less like
pottery, and is marked both on the front and on the back.
