Decor: Volendam Year: 1905. High:
23cm. Wide: 15cm Painted
by: JS = Johannes Theodorus Stam.
Above is a nice set of Volendam tiles, it is painted as a pair, the word
"Volendam" is painted on the left on the male tile and on the right on the
female tile. This pattern was also produced on vases, at the time
they did not use decor names, the name was mentioned on the
"face" of the pottery.
The Painter signature of JS was used a number of times in different time
frames ; Mr Stam worked for the Gouda Pottery between 1898 and 1910.
Pottery paintings of traditional Dutch clothes can be found on the
older Dutch pottery. The theme was produced by a few potteries.
Volendam is a small village located on an inland "sea" in the
Netherlands. The village of Volendam is famous for its "smoked eel"
produce. I can only guess what the baskets the man carries were used
for, but eels is my guess. He is also wearing some sort of leather
boot, probably more water resistant.
