Sometimes collectors separate earthenware in items that can be used and items for decoration.

I think most earthenware has some sort of use associated with them. There are some exceptions like wall tiles and most clogs which seem to be for decoration only, but most if not all other items have some purpose associated with them. Of course  a vase can be used for decoration, but its main purpose is still to put cut flowers into them.

What happened is that World War 1 and the depression around it caused a shortage for many articles. Earthenware producers like the PZH used this to their advantage and produced the wanted articles, this time made out of clay. The items below, a shallow bowl and a tray are  clearly used for sweets, fruit or just the odd bits and pieces.
