This vase was made by Brantjes in the town of Purmerend, some 90
kilometers from the town of Gouda. Because of the hand painted design and
similarities in the manufacturing process between other Gouda potteries
and this one, also this maker is grouped in under the generic name of
Gouda pottery.
The Brantjes pottery already existed before the PZH even started, but it
had a shorter life, they existed from 1896 to 1907. They are still known
for top quality pottery (Even the inside of the neck has been
painted) and many of their designs have quite an artistic look.
The mark has the following information written on it:
A clog = the company mark.
The letter H on the top left = the painters monogram. The left leg of the
H also functions as a T, and the right leg doubles up for the letter L.
(The Gouda pottery book lists Mr Theodorus Hendrikus Leeuwendal as the
possible painter.)
The letter “B” on the top right = 1897. (An “A” stands for 1896, a “B”
stands for 1897 and so on.)
The letters NB = initials of Nicolaas Brantjes, the original owner
The text “Faience de Purmerende Hollande” = earthenware from Purmerend in
Holland, this is written in French rather than in Dutch, probably because
they had their sights set on export overseas.
Dec:D = decor “D”. (I have seen at least 6 different floral designs
painted on this model vase.)
1014 = stands for the model number.
