Decor: Trekschuit Year:around 1930. High:
15cm. Wide: 15cm Painted
by: Unknown.
Above is quite an historic view where people dressed in local traditional
costumes pull (and push) a boat from the town of Edam to the town of
Volendam. The towns are a little over 1 kilometer apart from each other.
This activity was primarily designed to be a tourist attraction in the
early 1900’s. The name on the tile is Trekschuit, this is Dutch and
translates to Drawboat.
The same scene can be found on various postcards from the early 1900’s. In
the postcard on the right the boat returns to Edam.
The tile was covered with cold glaze, so not fired after it was painted.
This in general results in a lower quality end product. The technique was
used in the depression years which followed the first world war.
I am unsure about the pottery where this was painted. On the bottom right
above the word of Delft is a makers mark; a triangle with a diamond shape
inside of it. Also 3 dots exist inside the triangle.
