Decor: The Lazarus gate Year: sround 1910. High:
30cm. Wide: 20cm Painted
by: Unknown.
I think this is a painting of the Lazarus poort, as it was at one stage in
time, before year 1900. It could have been copied from another existing
painting or drawing. The painting will also never be as accurate as a
photo. People from the Gouda Historic society also think it is the
“Lazarus poort”.
The tile was made in the early 1900’s by the “Plateel fabriek Zuid
Holland”, The tile is not saying it is the Lazarus gate and from which
date, but compare it to a photo of the Lazarus gate just before they broke
it down in the 1939/1940:
The alleyway that leads to the “poort” is very narrow; the entrance was
made on the far left.
The exit on the other side is in the middle; therefore the passageway
through the gate is not straight but bends to the right. (You do not see
that often) This is visible both the tile and the photo.
The wall on the right is already broken down on the photo, but the marks
where it used to be are still visible on the “poort” itself and it matches
the position of the wall on the tile.
The door into the building on the left is visible on the tile.
The last door on the left in the narrow street itself is visible.
The photo still shows the guttering on the Lazarus gate; this matches the
style of the guttering on the wall on the right of the tile.
The wooden shutters of the windows are visible (Behind the glass) on the
photo.
Cobble stones were used in front of the Lazarus gate, from the attached
photo it is not clear if they also used it on the back, but on the tile it
is.
