The decor of the vase on the left is the oldest style of farm-scenery
paintings I know of. I believe it was made around 1901 and pre-dates the
vase on the right. It has an oblong shape, so not round. In this case the
painter signatures did not help to date any of these vases more
accurately, but the stamp with just "made in Zuid Holland" without the
word "Gouda" is normally only found on the older PZH pottery.
The clay used seems to be a bit softer, this is because it was made out of
locally found clay. They had batches of yellow, reddish and grayish clay.
These types of clay were softer than the white imported clay used in later
years. The vase on the left is possibly by Mr Houdijck, the vase on
the right has the L.K. signature, this can be found more often on
early Gouda pottery. Both of these decors were superseded by scenery vases
with a band of even colour above and below the scenery.
