Model 146 Decor: Magpie Year:
Around 1915. High: 38cm. Wide:
18cm Painted by: Franciscus Gerardus IJsselstein.
This is an older model vase and I think it dates around 1915. The vase is beautifully painted with a Magpie bird painted with great detail. Also the usual Australian flora is present and this time with a very detailed wattle tree branch and flowers; I have never seen this with so much detail.
The small IJ under the markings is the painter's signature. What is of interest here is that the painter was still quite young, probably around 15 or 16 years himself, and at school he was taught cursive writing. That probably explains why he wrote his signature that way. In later years he probably changed his signature to capital letters because these are much easier to paint.
